2006 Halloween Ghoul Meet

Hosted by BADWEST Diving

Thanks to all those who participated and helped make this year's Ghoul Meet a success.

Some creative, funny, and spectacular costumes with some great diving was the order of the day...A beautiful little witch (Melissa Murphy methinks) was flying around the pool on her broom, but was ay too cute to scare anyone :).  A very creative Gatorade costume (Kaitlin Porter), hardly scared us, but because of it's detail work, won in her category.  We had devils, candy corn girl, Minnie Mouse, pajama girl, Cleopatra, Gypsies and even something I can't quite describe.. protruding from 9 & under Kara Cromwell. We thank all of you for coming with your delightful costumes!!!

Even  Coach Pollino braved the damp & windy day and wore his hula girl grass skirt costume.  Coach Kelly was his customary pirate (yawwwwwnn), buccaneer, or whatever he thinks he was in another life!!  Some good fun...now on to the diving!

We had 52 divers representing six area diving teams:

Central Mass Diving, Charles River Diving, Providence Twisters, South Shore Diving, BAD & BADWEST

The meet was highlighted by six AAU national qualifying scores

11 & Under Girls (qualifying score needed - 150):  Casey Sherman - BAD - 152.55

12-13 Girls (qualifying score needed - 205): Sloane Brazina - CRD - 236.30 & Michelle Higgins - BADW -217.20
14-15 Girls:  (qualifying score needed - 250)Katy Feng - BAD - 289 and Amy Zuerndorfer - BADW - 280.00

16-18 Boys (qualifying score needed - 365):  Patrick DeMarle - BADW - 391.25

BOYS GHOUL MEET RESULTS

GIRLS GHOUL MEET RESULTS

Was nice to see Rybo Shelley who has been missing in action with a foot injury...due back soon....Also in attendance and helping out a lot was BADWEST diver Laura Nocka who is recovering from knee surgery (neither of the aforementioned injuries are from diving.:)  And if anyone was wondering who the good-looking young lady was who helped judge the divers, the costumes and helped with the awards ceremonies...

It was former BAD diver, Jen St. Thomas ...who was a high school diving standout from Wellesley High in the 90's...Jen went on to have a stellar career with the great Harvey Wheeler @ Bowdoin....My BAD for not introducing her.  Great help..great to see her....

Besides the divers and coaches that contributed their time, effort ....I want to thank the tons of support that BADWEST parents (& divers) displayed....

At the risk of leaving someone out....(so I won't list names-you know who you are)

Morning registration, decorations and food set up was super!!!

Puter people and scoring table were, as usual, the cog that kept the wheel running....
I have to guess things went well with the food and tee shirt tables....didn't get much time to get out there...and have not had time to figure out sales just yet...If you had any problems please let me know...

Briefly the parent support was outstanding...a great team effort....and I thank you.

~ February 18, 2006:  Winter Blahs Meet ~

BADWEST thanks Coach Wil Aybar and the College of the Holy Cross for co-hosting our annual Winter Blahs Meet this year @ their great facility.  It gave all divers an opportunity to display their talents on 1 and 3 meter!  We hope it can be an annual meet out in Worcester.

We also heartily thank all coaches for their judging and help. We hope you ate your fill!...We can't forget the puter/scoring table workers:  Kathy Cromwell, Michelle Goodwin, Mark Pieper and some who offered but were not needed..Special mention to BADWEST diver and super announcer Carol Anne Davis, and the "We Are Family" Rees sisters-Olivia, Rebecca & Hannah.  Food people are the best:  Debbie Rees, Cindy McKenna, Michelle Goodwin, Maureen LaCerte, Vince Scuoteguazza, Ray & Colleen Sherman and everyone else I fail to recognize (like the Academy Awards, we're limited by time:)...Thanks....You made our meet a success!

MEET PARTICIPATION:  First, and for the record.  BADWEST divers and parent's can be very proud that we showed up in numbers and overall, as a team, looked pretty darn good.

Total divers:  47     Total BADWEST divers (including lesson/novice divers): 20
Total Teams:  5  ~ Springfield Area Diving, Polar Bear Diving, So. Shore Diving, BAD/BADWEST & Central Mass Diving

Total 3 meter divers/entries:  27
Total BADWEST 3 mtr divers:  15 (more than half the total)

PUBLISHER'S NOTES:  While our BADWEST numbers are commendable, we need more participation in our New England Association.  FYI:  this is a tough time of the season for many college coaches to attend USD or AAU meets as they are in their college League/Conference/National Championship meet mode.  But I am confident that in the future, we will have more participation in our AAU meets.  We had 72 in our Christmas Meet!....and we had 60+ divers in our previous meets - The Ghoul Meet and the Gobbler Meet. Count 'em. Four Meets!  We hosted or co-hosted four meets!  Thanks to you all!

My sources tell me that we were by far, the most heavily attended of the six meets  offered in the New England Association thus far this season. (one novice meet at Harvard the same day as our Christmas Meet and another on Thanksgiving weekend which we chose not to go to)...I bring this to light because there are other very competitive divers/teams in our association who have chosen not to participate in our AAU meets.  We need and want them to come to our meets....just as they need us to go to their meets.  With that said, I want all of you to prepare for the next meet...like 'SOMEONE OUT THERE IS WORKING HARDER THAN YOU ARE!"  Those of you whom we decide will be attending Regionals @ Wesleyan on the weekend of 30 Mar - 2 Apr, will meet up with some tough competition...we will have to decide in the next few weeks who this meet may benefit.

More later on that...for now, be proud of your accomplishments: By running these four meets this year...and opening them up to the association, we learned much:
We worked thru not-so-dependable diving computer programs and have fixed some glitches, found some great computer people and super support from parents and divers at the food tables and scoring tables...
